We are grateful to Dr. Pieter Bisboer for identifying the present painting as a work by Wolfaerts.
The present painting numbers among Wolfaerts’ rare Italianate landscapes, which the artist did in the late 1650s. In the past, some of them were attributed to Nicolaes Berchem. Throughout his life, Wolfaerts relied on the works of Berchem and Salomon Rombout for models. The present painting, showing a pastoral scene against an Italian landscape backdrop, betrays the artist’s great dependence on Berchem.
